The redwood is not typical for Europe, it was imported to Bulgaria at the end of the 19th century. Forester Yordan Mitrev planted three redwoods, brought from North America, in the Yuchbunar area near the village of Bogoslov. His monument stands near the grove, next to the memorial plaque for the first tourists in Kyustendil. The redwoods are closely connected with the history of the tourist movement in the city and are traditionally part of the commemoration of the anniversaries of the first tourist march in 1914. In the same year 4 more redwoods were planted. In 1898, the first three trees were declared a natural landmark.
Redwoods are the largest plant species in the world - giant trees that can live and grow for decades. In Bulgaria all redwoods were brought in the XIX - XX century, they are not local.

In the place Yuchbunar near the village of Bogoslov, municipality Kyustendil, a grove of redwoods was built, among which the three redwood gigantea trees, planted in 1890 by a local forester, are especially significant. They are already over 130 years old and are over 30 m high. The circumference of each tree is between 8 and 9 m. A hundred more trees have been grown and planted from seeds and so they form the only redwood forest in Bulgaria.
