Levorechki Monastery

The monastery "St. 40 Martyrs ”is located near the village of Leva Reka, after which it is named Levorechki. It was founded in the 15th-16th century, renovated in the 19th century, and according to the legends it was started in the 11th century by Tsar Peter Delyan.
A modern monastery church was built in 1850. Probably at that time a school functioned at the monastery. Only part of the frescoes have been preserved, and in the second half of the twentieth century the monastery was abandoned and destroyed, although in the 1970s the church was declared a cultural monument of national importance. The church was preserved then and restored in 2009. In 2019 the monastery was renovated and reopened with the support of the Rural Development Program (2014-2020).
The most significant landmark of the Levorech Monastery are the frescoes in the monastery church. Based on the iconic styles, scholars date them to the 17th century. The exhibited painted wooden iconostasis from 1866, made by Samokov masters, is also interesting.
