There are various legends about the origin of the bridge. According to one of them, the gods did not want to get their feet wet when crossing the river, and so they created God's Bridge. According to another, the place was once the residence of Tsar Constantine and Queen Elena, and every morning she met the sunrise here. There are different versions about the origin of the name of the bridge. According to one of them, it comes from the years when the river became full of water and carried all the bridges in its path, except this one, because it was under the protection of God. Another interpretation is an expression of human adoration for a natural phenomenon and an acknowledgment that no human hand could create such a miracle. Another legend says that God's bridge really served as a bridge over an old Roman road. This is evidenced by the remains of an ancient fortress, which served as a guard during the late Roman era and the time of the Bulgarian Middle Ages.
